THE CLERESTORY WINDOWS

Extending on the upper south and upper north sides of the Church, are the Clerestory Windows which contain ancient Christian symbols.

South Aisle Clerestory Windows

(from right to left)

  • Harp - symbol of music usually associated with King David.   St. Augustine said that a 10 string harp symbolizes the 10 Commandements. (obscured by flag in picture)
  • Cross & Crown - represents the reward of a faithful life to those who believe in the Crucified Savior.
  • Chalice & Host - represents the Eucharist.
  • Anchor - used in the catacombs of ancient Rome by early Christians - represents hope in Christ.
  • Compass - a symbol of being guided to Christ.
  • Crossed crosiers - a symbol of mercy, firmness and correction of vices.
  • Monstrance - a symbol of the true presence.

  • Heart with cross & 3 lilies - a symbol of Jesus' death and resurrection.
  • Cross resting on a triangle with 3 M's - a symbol of Jesus and the Trinity.
  • Heart with cross - a symbol of religious ferver.
  • Heart with 3 nails - a symbol of Jesus' crucifixion.
  • the Lamb of God - a symbol of Christ.
  • Bishop's miter - a symbol of Ecclesiastical authority.

  • Crown - represents the victory over sin and death (the crown of Martyrdom).

  • IHS - iota, eta, sigma from the Greek spelling of Jesus' name.
  • Monstrance

  • Sheaf of Wheat - a symbol of the bread of life.
  • Heart with cross

  • Dove - a symbol of the Holy Spirit
  • Bishop's miter
